HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A national workshop on the Underground Railroad is being held at a Hilton Head school.

Area media outlets report that 50 historians and researchers are attending Friday’s event at the Cherry Hill School.

The workshop is being sponsored by the Mitchelville Preservation Project. Mitchelville is a freedman’s village founded during the Civil War and was added to the Network to Freedom program earlier this year.

The program consists of sites in 34 states important to helping slaves escape from bondage in the South.
