Bill Maher announced Friday that he will personally target Republican Rep. John Kline for defeat this November.

The liberal host announced the “winning loser” during a live broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” in Washington DC, after viewers nominated Mr. Kline for the host’s “Flip a District” challenge, The Hill reported.

“He’s one of those silent threats you never see coming. … Ebola. ISIS. John Kline,” Mr. Maher said of the Minnesota congressman. “He embodies the sellouts that keep this town running.”

On the “Flip a District” website, Mr. Maher describes Mr. Kline, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, as an “anti-environment, anti-union, anti-mine safety, pro-war party hack.”

The host had solicited names of 16 Republican lawmakers through social media in a NCAA-style bracket to determine who to boot from office, The Hill reported.

“There are a lot of terrible, entrenched congressmen out there,” Mr. Maher said. “Many don’t even have an opponent. We’re going to choose one of them, throw him into the national spotlight, and see if we can’t send him scuttling under the refrigerator on Election Night.”

The host will now campaign against Mr. Kline in an attempt to flip Minnesota’s 2nd District from red to blue. Only problem is Mr. Kline isn’t exactly a Democratic target.

The Washington Post reports that the Republican has never taken less than 54 percent of the vote, including when he was an actual target in the 2012 election. The paper argued that Mr. Maher’s money would probably be better spent fighting Rep. Mike Coffman in Colorado’s 6th District.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr. Maher admitted he doesn’t know much about Mr. Kline.

“I’ve never heard of John Kline, but he sounds like he might be Jewish,” he joked, The Post reported.

Mr. Kline is Methodist.

His challenger, Democrat Mike Obermueller, issued a statement endorsing Mr. Maher’s pick, arguing that Mr. Kline is “beginning to receive the attention he deserves for his actions.”

Mr. Kline fired back, accusing his rival of engaging in “sleazy and slimy politics.”

“Maher saluted 9/11 terrorists and called our troops ‘cowardly,’ he repeatedly has degraded Christians and calls them ‘schizophrenic,’ and he repugnantly compared special-needs children to ‘dogs,’ yet Mike Obermueller promotes this behavior essentially naming Maher as his campaign manager,” campaign spokesman Troy Young said in a statement, The Hill reported.
