ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Cornell University is starting it’s 150th-anniversary celebration.

The central New York school turns 150 on April 27. But the Ithaca Journal reports ( ) that the celebration kicked off Friday with a Big Red lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building.

Cornell President David Skorton participated in the ceremony, in which the Manhattan skyscraper glowed with Cornell’s red and white colors.

Activities will continue around the world through 2015.
