PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - An ex-convict will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole for rape and murder in the slaying of a Michigan couple.

Thirty-two-year-old Manuel Gamez was sentenced Wednesday by St. Clair County Circuit Judge Michael West.

Gamez was paroled in 2010 from a 15-year 2006 prison sentence for home invasion.

A jury found Gamez guilty in August of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of torture and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The bodies of 29-year-old Daniel McRoberts and 26-year-old Melissa Ichenberg were found July 30, 2013, at Ichenberg’s apartment. Authorities say Gamez stabbed McRoberts more than 40 times and strangled Ichenberg.

Defense lawyer Edward Marshall said during the trial that there was little physical evidence to link Gamez to the crime.
