PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Peoria officials on Wednesday named Jerry Mitchell the city’s new police chief, a post he held on an interim basis since his predecessor resigned to take a job at Caterpillar Inc.

Mitchell became interim police chief after Steve Settingsgaard stepped down in June to become Caterpillar’s North American regional security director.

City Manager Patrick Urich says there were plans to do a nationwide search for a new chief, but after watching Mitchell lead the police department during the interim period it became apparent he was the right man for the job.

Mitchel, who joined the Peoria Police Department in 1991, was promoted to sergeant in 1999, lieutenant in 2008, captain in 2009, and assistant chief in 2013.
