MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Two retired Long Island correction officers have been cleared of all charges in a perjury case.

John Andujar and Joseph Donlon hugged and shook hands with family and friends after the verdict was read Wednesday in Nassau County court.

The charges stemmed from an altercation with an inmate in October 2011. The officers were accused of testifying that the inmate had attacked Andujar without warning while in the jail’s transportation unit.

Attorneys for the men say they’re elated. They say the case pitted the word of an inmate against two 25-year veterans of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department.

The men have since retired.

The inmate was later indicted, but prosecutors subsequently dropped those charges.

The officers had faced up to seven years if they had been convicted.
