COVINGTON, La. (AP) - Ray Alfred, who served 24 years on the St. Tammany Parish School Board, has died.

School board spokeswoman Meredith Mendez confirmed Alfred’s death Wednesday. He was 60 years old.

The New Orleans Advocate reported (https://bit.ly/1ASnHKb ) Alfred served six terms and was running unopposed for the Slidell-area District 14 seat.

Board President Elizabeth Heintz, in a statement, said Alfred’s death is a “great loss” for the board. She says he was always dedicated to making sure students received the best education possible.

Alfred served as chairman of the board’s business affairs committee in 2010 and the District One director of the Louisiana School Boards Association. He also was recognized by the National School Board Member Recognition Program for his commitment to public education.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
