ONEONTA, Ala. (AP) - A north Alabama woman will serve two years in prison for the shotgun slaying of her ex-husband.

A judge handed down the sentence Thursday for Elsie Wells Thomas of Corner. She’ll also spend five years on probation and must pay a $10,000 fine.

Jurors convicted the woman of manslaughter in June in the shooting death of ex-husband Matt Allen in 2011. She had been charged with murder.

Thomas told police she acted in self-defense. She said the man threatened her with a gun so she shot him.

Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey says Allen died from a close-range shotgun blast to his heart.
