MATTAWAN, Mich. (AP) - The father of a western Michigan high school quarterback has filed a federal civil rights complaint against the football coach.

The Kalamazoo Gazette (https://bit.ly/1wJsjVf ) says Lawrence Curtis’ complains that Mattawan Consolidated Schools didn’t act on the comments by coach Matt Stephens.

Curtis’ complaint says the 44-year-old coach told a player he was the “wrong color” to play a certain position and told other players they needed to lift more weights because they resembled Holocaust victims.

Stephens also teaches social studies at Mattawan High School. He tells the newspaper that he “sometimes made comments that were not well thought out.”

Superintendent Patrick Bird says he hasn’t concluded that those improper comments he can confirm that Stephens made were made with ill intent.

Mattawan is about 140 miles west of Detroit.
