BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A Missouri man incarcerated at a federal prison in Southeast Texas has been sentenced to more than 12 years for fatally beating another inmate who he mistakenly believed was in prison for molesting children.

Jacob Smith of Forsyth, Missouri, was sentenced Thursday after earlier pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit murder.

Federal prosecutors say the 23-year-old Smith was incarcerated at the prison in Beaumont in October 2012 when he and another inmate entered the cell of Edward Lee Bowlin. They say the two men used their hands and feet to beat him. They left but Smith soon returned and continued to beat Bowlin, causing him to suffer head and brain trauma. Bowlin fell into a coma and died in November 2013.

Smith’s original offense was not immediately clear.
