RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A group representing four members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has filed a federal lawsuit against Jackson County, claiming it doesn’t given equal voting access to Native American voters.

Part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is located in the county. Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed the complaint Thursday in Rapid City.

It says Jackson County has refused to open a satellite office in Wanblee, so people who live on the reservation have to drive farther to the county seat of Kadoka to register to vote and cast ballots early.

The state’s attorney could not be reached. The county auditor said she hadn’t seen the complaint.
