DETROIT (AP) - A judge has threatened hefty fines and even jail if TV crews broadcast conversations online between a Detroit police officer and his trial lawyer.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway briefly excused the jury to issue the warning Thursday, the first day of trial for Officer Joseph Weekley. He’s charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 7-year-old girl.

Hathaway says microphones were picking up conversations between Weekley and defense lawyer Steve Fishman during breaks. The trial is being streamed online by some TV stations. They include WJBK, known as Fox 2.

The station has apologized. It also paid a $10,000 fine last year for accidentally posting video of jurors in Weekley’s first trial.
