FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A Fayetteville man has been arrested and charged with embezzlement after a chase involving Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said in a statement that 25-year-old Edward Franklin Whetsell was arrested earlier this week after a chase by deputies.

Whetsell worked at a business and is accused of telling customers to write a personal check to him to pay their bills. Investigators say he cashed the checks but never turned in the money to the company.

He is accused of taking more than $4,000 between May and August.

Tanna said when deputies located him, he drove away.

It was not clear if Whetsell has an attorney. He is charged with four counts of embezzlement, and several violations related to the chase.
