WHAT’S AT STAKE

Interim coach Steve Axman makes his debut for Nicholls a week after Charlie Stubbs resigned for health reasons with a 10-38 record in his fifth season. The Colonels will try to snap a nine-game losing streak in their final non-league game. North Texas wants to bounce back from a surprisingly poor performance in a 42-21 home loss to Louisiana Tech. It’s the first meeting since 2002 for these former Southland Conference foes.

KEY MATCHUP

North Texas offense vs. Nicholls run defense. The Mean Green have struggled on the ground, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry. They have a chance to get well against the worst run defense statistically in the FCS. The Colonels are allowing 415 yards rushing per game, including 495 in a 73-7 loss to Arkansas.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nicholls: QB Kalen Henderson was the leading rusher in a 27-10 loss to Division II foe Henderson State. He finished with 58 yards rushing despite four sacks and had 147 yards passing.

North Texas: RB Reggie Pegram has a team-leading 152 yards rushing after missing the final five games of last season with a knee injury.

Axman has been out of football since 2011, when he wrapped up a five-year stint as offensive coordinator at Idaho. He was Troy Aikman’s quarterbacks coach at UCLA in the late 1980s. … North Texas wraps up a three-game September homestand, the first in school history. It’s the first time since 1966 that North Texas didn’t have a road game in September. .. North Texas is 122nd nationally in total offense at 242 yards per game through three games after setting a school record with 5,336 yards last season (411 per game).
