DETROIT (AP) - Statues of purple cows around downtown Detroit are part of an effort to build awareness for cancer survivors and the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball.

The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/1DlyEIj ) the 13 life-sized cows are on display at locations including Hart Plaza and Campus Martius.

The cows carry a message: “For a World With Less Cancer and More Birthdays.”

General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet brand, which is sponsoring the ball, sought to bring the CowParade public art project to Detroit.

The cows will be auctioned at the Sept. 27 ball. The winning bidders will receive a cow with an assigned artist who will design a cow that can be displayed in front of a business. Starting Nov. 15, a total of 16 decorated cows will be displayed for a month.
