LAS VEGAS (AP) - A neighbor who fired an assault rifle to break up a pre-dawn argument involving an armed man in a Las Vegas apartment complex courtyard was shot and killed by the fleeing gunman, who was later arrested after a four-hour standoff with SWAT officers, police said Friday.

One of three men confronted by the assault weapon-wielding man was wounded in the ankle in the 5:30 a.m. Thursday shooting in a neighborhood about 4 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, police Officer Larry Hadfield said

Another of the three men returned fire with the handgun, killing the neighbor.

One man who fled the scene was being sought for questioning, Hadfield said.

The man with the ankle injury was hospitalized, and the suspected shooter was arrested after police surrounded a home on a nearby street.

No names were immediately made public.

Police said the man with the assault rifle intervened after witnessing the man with the handgun using it as a bludgeon to hit one of the other men while they argued.

It wasn’t clear why the man with the rifle became involved, but police said he fired several shots as the three men ran.

“If someone sees an altercation happening, we’re hoping they call 911,” Hadfield said. “Let law enforcement intervene before a tragedy like this unfolds.”

Arriving officers found the 25-year-old man dead in the courtyard with one apparent gunshot wound, police said.
