YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - A 72-year-old inmate serving a 17-year sentence at the South Dakota State Prison has died following an extended illness.

Stanton Day was sentenced in Meade County in September 2007. He was charged with sexual contact with a child under 16 and sexual exploitation of a child.

The Department of Corrections says Day died at a Yankton hospital under hospice care Thursday.

An autopsy is being conducted.
