CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that caused what’s being termed as significant damage to the Nucor plant in Berkeley County.

Local media outlets report that firefighters responded to the fire around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Cainhoy Deputy Fire Chief Steve Goodwin said additional firefighters had to be called in.

According to Goodwin, flames on an outdoor conveyor system got into the building, forcing firefighters to remain outdoors because of safety concerns.

Crews extinguished the flames on the exterior of the building within 45 minutes and contained the blaze in about two hours. Goodwin said the firefighters remained at the plant to treat hotspots.

No one was hurt in the fire, which is still under investigation. The extent of the damage is still being determined.
