SORRENTO, La. (AP) - The race for Sorrento police chief is now down to two candidates

One of three candidates who qualified last week in the Nov. 4 election has withdrawn for personal reasons.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1vxryOB ) that C.J. Martin declined to discuss those reasons Friday.

Martin says he filed withdrawal papers Wednesday with the Ascension Parish clerk of court.

The remaining candidates are Fern Barnett and Jerry P. LeBlanc.

Town voters will also decide Nov. 4 whether to abolish both the position of the elected chief and the Police Department.

The winner of the special election will complete the term of former Police Chief Earl Theriot Jr. He pleaded guilty to a federal charge that he lied to an FBI agent about his alleged sexual assault of a woman last year.
