BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police are investigating a spate of violence that killed six people over the past five days. In the latest incident early Tuesday, a man lost his life in a hail of gunfire outside a home in the Ensley area.

Police said they received a flood of emergency calls about the most recent shooting, just before 1:15 a.m. Tuesday. The city’s gunfire detection system - ShotSpotter - also alerted them to the trouble in the area, Al.com reported. When officers arrived, they found a man in his 30s dead in front of an SUV, its window shattered by bullets.

Earlier, Birmingham police identified a woman found stabbed to death inside her home Sunday evening as Linda Allbritton, who was in her 70s. Officers believe a burglar broke into her home in the Avondale area around 6 p.m. Sunday, encountered the woman and stabbed her in the chest and neck, WBRC-TV reported.

A neighbor found Allbritton’s body when she went to check on her at the residence, police said in a written statement. Detectives said Allbritton’s vehicle, a tan Buick Park Avenue, was taken from the residence. Al.com reports that police later recovered the vehicle.

Also on Sunday night, at least 40 rounds were fired during a gun battle outside a Birmingham motorcycle club that killed two people and wounded two others, police said.

That shooting happened outside the Showstoppers Motorcycle Club, Birmingham police said. Investigators believe the battle started with an argument between members of two different motorcycle clubs.

Potential witnesses were not cooperating with detectives, Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards said.

On Friday, firefighters were called to a blaze at an abandoned house in the Hooper City area. After the fire was put out, a man was discovered on the floor of the home with several stab wounds to the chest, Al.com reported. His identity hasn’t been released.

Also Friday, a 50-year-old man was shot and killed while walking with his wife in George Ward Park. Police said McDaniel Watson was killed during an apparent robbery attempt.
