AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The University of Maine System says former House Speaker Glenn Cummings has been tapped to serve as interim president of the University of Maine at Augusta.

Cummings, president and executive director of Good Will-Hinckley, will take the leadership post on Sept. 9.

He’s replacing Allyson Handley, who’s stepping down to become executive director of the National University’s Sanford Education Center in California.

Since 2010, Cummings has worked at Good Will-Hinkley. The statewide residential school delivers a curriculum centered on the environment, agriculture and forestry. Cummings has also served Maine House speaker and chairman of the Joint Committee of Education and Cultural Affairs.
