COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) - A Columbus man convicted of stabbing and assaulting his wife before a standoff with police has been sentenced to prison.

Alfredo Santistevan, 58, was given six to 12 years for assault and terroristic threats, the Columbus Telegram reported (https://bit.ly/Z5D5XO ). He’d pleaded no contest after prosecutors amended and dropped other charges. He was sentenced on Friday in Platte County District Court. The judge credited Santistevan with 148 days already served.

Santistevan was arrested after the standoff on April 3 and taken to a local hospital to be treated for self-inflicted knife wounds. His wife said her husband had “gone crazy,” Columbus officer Bradley Wangler said in a statement supporting Santistevan’s arrest.

“She said he attacked her with a knife, cutting off her clothes, choking her to the point that she could not breathe and hitting her across the face,” Wangler said in the court document. It said Santistevan’s wife suffered a knife wound to one of her hands and swelling near one of her eyes and on her nose before she fled the home.

Santistevan was arrested and removed from the couple’s home on a stretcher about two hours after the standoff began.

Judge Robert Steinke said at the sentencing hearing that he had to balance Santistevan’s lack of a criminal record against the violence of the assault on his wife.

“You also don’t show any insight (in a presentence report) about how to keep from repeating the offenses,” the judge told Santistevan. The defendant is a former drug and alcohol counselor who had lost his professional license because of sexual misconduct with a former patient.
