MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A man has been arrested in a fatal shooting in Mesa on the same day of his prison release.

Mesa police say 22-year-old Ignacio Eide Lomeli Jr. is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder.

His bond was set a $1 million at his initial court appearance Tuesday.

The victim hasn’t been positively identified, but police say Lomeli didn’t know him.

Investigators say Lomeli was at a family gathering in Mesa to celebrate his prison release.

Another man came by and Lomeli told police he felt threatened and approached him with a gun in his waistband.

Words were exchanged and Lomeli allegedly pulled out the gun and fatally shot the man.

Lomeli says the other man was armed and the shooting was self-defense. Police found no weapon on the victim.
