NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Rutgers University says its new class is the largest ever for New Jersey’s flagship public university.

Classes begin Tuesday at the state university, including nearly 7,900 first-year undergraduate students.

Most of the newcomers are at the main campus in New Brunswick and Piscataway.

Nearly 90 percent of the class is from New Jersey and more than one-third are the first in their families to attend college.

Nearly 200 were valedictorians or salutatorian of their high school graduating glasses.

The university has a big change in its sports world as its teams begin competing in the Big Ten conference.
