SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say a man drove off a dock at the San Diego Yacht Club in an apparent suicide attempt.

When police arrived at the scene early Monday, they found an Acura SUV about 40 feet from the dock, submerged in 25 feet of water.

Harbor Police Sgt. Todd Rakos says a soaking wet man standing on the dock initially denied being the driver of the car.

After admitting he had been behind the wheel, the unidentified man said he had been depressed and drove into the bay to kill himself.

U-T San Diego reports (https://bit.ly/1qwWFp7) the man was taken to a county mental health facility on a 72-hour hold.

Police reported minor damage to the dock.

The SUV, which was towed from San Diego Bay, was a total loss.
