TUSAYAN, Ariz. (AP) - Management of a lightning-sparked fire burning on the Kaibab National Forest has forced officials to temporarily detour portions of the Arizona Trail.

Officials say large signs and detour maps have been posted in the area of the Belknap Fire so visitors will know which areas to avoid as crews use managed ignitions along the eastern edge of the fire.

Crews are igniting grass and brush along the tops of the ridges to slowly back fire down the Coconino Rim at lower intensities. The planned ignitions are expected to last several days.

The fire has charred nearly half of a square mile southeast of Grandview Point. Crews are using the flames to burn up hazardous fuels on the forest floor.

Forest officials also warned smoke would be visible in the area.
