RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Connecticut woman whose kayak tipped over while paddling on the Long Island Sound has been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and local police.

Suffolk County Police and Coast Guard officials say Martha Bailey of Cheshire, Connecticut, put out the Mayday call over a handheld radio Saturday morning just north of Roanoke Point.

They say the 60-year-old Bailey was prepared and luckily activated an emergency location beacon and was wearing a life jacket and wetsuit.

Officials say Bailey’s beacon signal was picked up by Coast Guard officials in Boston, who directed rescuers to her location, narrowing down the potential search area.

A police helicopter located Bailey and directed a Coast Guard rescue boat to her.

She was taken in good health to the New Haven station.
