EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) - Tenants escaped injury Friday after their Evansdale town house caught fire.

The fire was reported around 4:55 p.m. Friday after three people in the town house smelled smoke, gathered their pets and left the building, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (https://bit.ly/1raLsvU ) reported.

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the second-story windows, according to Kent Smock with the Evansdale Fire Department. Crews extinguished the fire.

Smock said the fire started in a bedroom, and fire damage was contained to that room. The rest of the apartment sustained heat and smoke damage.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been asked to investigate because of the extent of the damage.
