COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The daily newspaper of Ohio’s capital city has endorsed Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) for re-election.

The Columbus Dispatch ( https://bit.ly/1wCojmG ) Sunday praised Kasich for shoring up state finances and revitalizing job and economic growth. It calls his first term among “the most consequential, successful and remarkable in Ohio’s history.”

The newspaper says Kasich has been a reformer in education and on social policies, such as when he backed expanding Medicaid despite opposition in his own party.

The Dispatch criticized Democratic nominee Ed FitzGerald for various problems that have undermined his campaign effort, such as disclosure that he went years without a driver’s license.

The Dispatch also endorsed Kasich in 2010, before the former congressman unseated Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.
