DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - The mother whose toddler drowned in a church baptistery in Alabama had prayed for years to have a son, said the family’s pastor, who described himself as speechless after the accident.

Authorities said Brayden King apparently drowned Friday when he entered a large rectangular water tank that faces the congregation.

Bishop T.D. Strong of the Pentecostal House of Prayer said the boy’s mother repeatedly prayed for the child. Strong described the family as “devastated.”

“Twenty-two months ago he gave her a son,” Strong told Al.com (https://bit.ly/1DqCu31). “And 22 months later he was taken away. I’ve been preaching 30 years and pastoring for 20 years, this is the first time in my ministry I’ve been speechless.”

The accident happened Friday while the boy was at the church with his 13-year-old sister and mother. Strong said the child’s mother was preparing for a skit to be performed at a prayer meeting. The child’s sister was tasked with watching the boy.

The teen lost track of the toddler for a short time.

Church members and emergency crews were unable to revive the child.

“I’m just at a loss, because it is so close to home,” Strong said. “People die every day. And I’ve done many funerals, but for a child to die in church, in the baptistery, it’s beyond ordinary and something that will never be forgotten by me.”

An autopsy was expected in the coming days, though authorities have said they do not suspect any foul play.
