TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Five friends who all have a passion for watersports and the preservation of the Great Lakes are postponing their plans to paddle across Lake Michigan until next year.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1C4c7OD ) the friends already raised more than $7,300 of their $10,000 goal and plan to continue fundraising for the Alliance for the Great Lakes until the paddleboard feat is complete. Fickle weather and mechanical difficulties with a would-be escort boat emerged, however.

Since planning began for this year’s trip, Ford Motor Co. representatives reached out to the paddlers to sponsor their 60-mile journey from Algoma, Wisconsin to Frankfort, Michigan.

One of the participants, Kwin Morris, says Ford wants to wait until spring, which gives the group more time to continue training and fundraising.
