LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Department of Health says a virus causing severe respiratory illness among some children has been confirmed in Arkansas.

The agency says one sample sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week has tested positive for enterovirus D68. Gary Wheeler, the branch chief of infectious disease at the health department, tells the Arkansas Democrat -Gazette (https://bit.ly/1uSUzma ) that about 12 other samples have been sent from the state for testing.

The illness causes cold-like symptoms but has been usually severe this year in some areas.

The CDC says infants, children and teenagers are more likely to become infected because they do not have immunity to the virus.
