FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an explosion at a U.S. Steel plant near Birmingham killed one worker and severely injured two others.

The explosion happened Sunday at the company’s Fairfield facility.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as 53-year-old Edward Lamar Bryant of Verbena, Alabama.

Details about what happened were not immediately clear. Al.com reports that the company has its own security and paramedics who responded. They referred questions to the company’s headquarters.

Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel issued a brief statement saying the injuries happened late Sunday at the company’s Fairfield Works in Birmingham. The company said the injured workers were taken to a hospital, and no further details were available.
