FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a 9th grader is in custody after bringing an unloaded handgun to a Flagstaff charter school.

Flagstaff police didn’t identify the student in Monday’s incident.

They say the student was dropped off at the Basis Charter School, but didn’t make it to class.

Police say the juvenile was “despondent” but didn’t release any details.

Officers went to the school when the student’s parents told staff that a handgun without ammunition was missing from their home.

Police searched the building, but didn’t find the student.

A short time after the search, staff members at the school heard footsteps on the roof.

The school was put on lockdown and officers and staff found the student on the roof.

Police say the gun was recovered and there were no injuries.
