REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Police say a high school student has been wounded in a suspected drive-by shooting while he was walking to school in suburban Detroit.

Lt. David Holt says the shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. Monday in Wayne County’s Redford Township.

Holt says the Thurston High School student was shot roughly a half-mile from the school. Police say the student was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

The Detroit News reports South Redford School District schools were placed under a “shelter in place” condition, allowing students into school but preventing them from leaving.

Holt says police are investigating what led to the shooting. He says the student told them a green, four-door vehicle that had two people inside may have been involved.
