SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota inmate who authorities accuse of killing his cellmate at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls has pleaded not guilty.

The Argus Leader (https://argusne.ws/1si87ZE ) reports 28-year-old Douglas Ipsen on Monday entered his plea to alternate counts of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter for the death of 37-year-old Kent Davidson.

Davidson’s death certificate states he died from strangulation and asphyxia. He was hurt late on Sept. 7 and died early on Sept. 8. Authorities said a bedsheet was used in the slaying.

Ipsen is serving a 75-year sentence on rape and sexual contact charges involving children.

Davidson was serving a life sentence after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in April in the shooting death of his girlfriend.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.
