COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 36-year-old convicted felon has been arrested after he dropped his gun and it fired, killing his friend.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release that Michael Odom was trying to put the gun in the waistband of his pants Saturday when it slipped through and fell to the concrete, firing once.

Lott says a friend with Odom was shot in the chest and died.

Authorities say Odom was not supposed to have a gun because he is a convicted felon. He has been charged with obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Odom remains in jail. It wasn’t known if he has a lawyer.
