JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper has submitted his resignation after being charged by Johnson City police with aggravated domestic assault.

The Johnson City Press (https://bit.ly/1shjDVa) reports the resignation of 28-year-old Russel Holtsclaw was announced on Friday in a statement from Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons and Tennessee Highway Patrol Col. Tracy Trott.

Holtsclaw was charged on Aug. 10 and placed on leave the same day. The newspaper reports the resignation came in lieu of termination.

Trott said that “allegations of domestic violence are absolutely not tolerated in the Tennessee Highway Patrol” regardless of the outcome of the criminal case.
