OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - California environmentalist and billionaire Thomas Steyer has given $1 million to a political action committee he’s set up in Washington state.

The donation, made last week to NextGen Climate Action Committee, posted Monday on the state’s Public Disclosure Commission website.

Phone and email messages left with Steyer’s group were not immediately returned late Monday afternoon. Last year, the committee spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in the state to support candidates in local council races in Whatcom County, as well as on the unsuccessful campaign of a Democratic senator who lost his seat to a Republican challenger.

This year, the ongoing power struggle in the Washington state Senate continues with several seats in play. Currently, a mostly Republican majority called the Majority Coalition Caucus holds a 26-23 majority in the upper chamber, while Democrats control the House.
