SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - Classmates are making memorial cards for a 12-year-old girl who died after a gun discharged in the vehicle in which she was riding on northern Michigan’s Drummond Island.

TV station WWTV reports (https://bit.ly/1rrxp5K ) Shellsea Lefebre of Sault Ste. Marie attended Sault Area Middle School. Principal Dean Paul says students are making cards and putting them on lockers.

Authorities say she was shot Sunday during a weekend youth hunt. The island is in Lake Huron in Chippewa County’s Drummond Township, about 50 miles southeast of Sault. Ste. Marie.

Authorities say the girl was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, occupied by two adults and another child, when a hunting rifle discharged in the front seat. Sheriff Robert Savoie says the gun’s safety wasn’t activated. The death is under investigation.
