CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Cranston has a new police chief after the city council unanimously approved the hiring of Michael Winquist, deputy superintendent of the state police.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/XTT1eC ) reports that the 45-year-old Winquist officially starts Oct. 1.

He takes over a department that is grappling with a parking ticket scandal and personnel disputes that prompted mayor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung to call in the state police to investigate.

The previous chief was put on leave in January then later retired. State police officers have been overseeing the department since the chief was put on leave.
