CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - The City of Crystal Springs is paying a $5,000 civil fine because of overflows from its wastewater lagoons.

The city agreed in July to pay the money to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

An Aug. 4 order published by the department says that Crystal Springs reported untreated sewage bypassed treatment systems 27 times beginning in April 2011.

The city says it has worked to solve the problem and applied for money from the Delta Regional Authority and a state revolving fund to make further fixes.

Crystal Springs was fined $25,000, but the order waives $20,000 if the city completes work by March 2016, including increasing pump capacity and overhauling sewer lines. If the city misses the deadline, it would pay $100 a day in addition to the $20,000.
