PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Federal environmental officials say Pierre is among a number of capital cities that are receiving technical assistance to develop sustainable infrastructure.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it is helping Pierre redesign its historic main street, South Pierre, using green infrastructure to reduce stormwater runoff and improve resiliency to extreme climate conditions.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says each project will focus on incorporating green infrastructure by using vegetation, soils and natural processes to manage stormwater.

Other cities that are being helped by this year’s Greening America’s Capitals program are Austin, Texas, Carson City, Nevada, Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia.
