VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - An environmental group is suing California’s State Water Resources Control Board, seeking to force officials to conduct a study of Ventura River water.

The Ventura County Star (https://bit.ly/1pqEzRS ) reports Tuesday that the suit filed last week by Santa Barbara Channelkeeper says the city of Ventura has for decades over-pumped and diverted the river’s water, threatening wildlife and water quality.

Channelkeeper’s Ben Pitterle says the suit seeks to force the board to conduct a “reasonable use analysis” of how much water is available and needed to ensure all beneficial uses are protected.

The river is the community’s original water source, with water rights dating back hundreds of years.

City officials say attorneys just received the suit Monday and were formulating a response.

Water board officials could not be reached for comment.
