HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha says the department has turned over to prosecutors an investigation into whether a sergeant assaulted his girlfriend at a Waipahu restaurant.

Kealoha told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://ow.ly/BQogb ) the department’s criminal investigation has been completed but its internal investigation isn’t done yet.

Police began investigating after receiving a video showing the officer punching his girlfriend at Restaurant Kuni and Lounge. Police are also investigating why responding officers didn’t file a report.

The sergeant has been placed on desk duty.

Kealoha spoke to reporters after meeting Tuesday with seven members of the Hawaii Women’s State Legislative Caucus. The group has raised concerns about how police handle domestic violence cases.

Police officials and lawmakers who attended the one-hour meeting described it as positive.
