NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - State police have identified a driver who died after his dump truck struck an overpass on Interstate 91 and he was ejected off the elevated highway onto a street below in New Haven.

Troopers say 50-year-old Dave Chavannes of Bridgeport was killed in the accident Tuesday morning on the ramp from the end of Interstate 91 southbound to Interstate 95 southbound. The wreck closed the heavily used ramp and caused a major traffic jam during the morning commute.

Authorities say the truck’s bed was raised when it hit the overpass. The truck then crashed into a concrete support pillar and Chavannes was ejected onto a street below. He was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

State police say their investigation will center on why the dump truck bed was raised.
