DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell has nominated the head judge of Delaware’s Superior Court system to become the next state Supreme Court justice.

Markell on Tuesday the nomination of Superior Court President Judge James T. Vaughn Jr. to replace Justice Carolyn Berger, who retired Sept. 1.

Vaughn has been a Superior Court for 15 years and has served as President Judge since 2004.

Vaughn, 65, graduated from Duke University in 1971 and received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1976. He is a Dover native who now lives in Smyrna and is a former member of the Clayton town council and the Smyrna school board.

Vaughn’s father, the late James Vaughn Sr., was a former state corrections commission who also served more than 25 years in the state Senate.
