FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Stony Brook senior associate athletic director Matt Larsen has been named the next athletic director at North Dakota State University.

NDSU announced the hiring Monday night. Larsen will succeed Gene Taylor, who left the school in June after 13 years to take the No. 2 position in athletics at Iowa. Larsen will begin his new duties in Fargo on Oct. 14.

Larsen, who is in his 19th year at Stony Brook in New York, beat out three other finalists for the NDSU job, including NDSU senior associate athletic director Troy Goergen.

“Matt’s preparation both in terms of breadth and depth is truly exceptional. He knows our program inside-out as well, and demonstrated that during the interview process,” NDSU President Dean Bresciani said in a statement. “He’s well-known and well-respected in NCAA Division I circles, and has a personal reputation for integrity and ethics that is beyond reproach.”

Larsen graduated from Stony Brook in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, and was a three-year starter at wide receiver for the football team. He earned a master of arts and liberal studies degree from Stony Brook in 1998 while serving as a graduate assistant coach for the football program, and has participated in the Sports Management Institute’s Executive Program.

NDSU is the three-time defending national champion in the Football Championship Subdivision, and is the top-ranked team so far this season.
