PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre has had its accreditation fully restored.

The independent Joint Commission accrediting organization found problems in the hospital’s pharmacy department during an April survey. The state Health Department then conducted a survey and concluded the hospital had failed to properly dispose of narcotics and had failed to follow infection control policy in a patient’s room.

CEO Bob Sutton says the hospital made changes and hosted another Joint Commission visit in late August. He says the hospital was notified last week that it was fully accredited.

Sutton says the hospital is better for having gone through the process.
