SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - No charges are expected against a man who fatally shot a pit bull in Spokane because it had attacked his service dog.

Police and the SCRAPS animal control agency say the pit bull was unsecured Saturday when it charged the service dog as the man and his dog were walking to a store in the lower South Hill neighborhood.

KREM reports (https://is.gd/xECgta) the service dog’s vest saved the 10-year-old German shepherd named Toby from serious injury.

Animal control workers say the pit bull was taken to emergency care, but did not survive.
